Personal profile

Shirish Joshi joins ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv in 2023 as a Senior Lecturer in Architecture (First Year Lead). Shirish has over twelve years of teaching, research, and professional experience in India and the U.S. covering the thematic areas of architecture and urbanism. He is a qualified architect and urban planner, educated at CEPT University Ahmedabad and the City College of New York, respectively.

Previously, Shirish has worked in practices in Ahmedabad, New York, and Mumbai, predominantly focusing on heritage conservation, sustainable ecologies, and human settlements. In 2008-09, he worked with Michael Sorkin at Terreform New York on the New York City Steady State project, which was intended to be an alternative master plan for the city’s future. Since 2009, Shirish has taught the undergraduate and graduate programs at the Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture (KRVIA) Mumbai, as an Assistant Professor. As part of his role, he has guided the documentation of buildings and settlements in cities across India while also developing new pedagogies for design studios. Shirish has a keen interest in teaching the formative years of education and has experimented with theatre and space as ways of teaching architecture. As part of research projects at the KRVIA design cell, Shirish has also collaborated on projects related to upgrading strategies for informal settlement and ecology studies, with external organizations. His current research explores the intersection of food production, urbanization, and the role of architecture.

Retaining his connection to external partnerships and dissemination, Shirish has developed course material for housing officials, served as an external reviewer at numerous institutes, supervised several undergraduate dissertations, and has frequently written about his ideas and work. He is co-author of the book ‘The Emergence of an Indigenous Practice in India – Selected works of Master, Sathe, and Bhuta 1932-1956’ (Sathe & Joshi, 2022).
