Happy 25th birthday, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv!


Today marks 25 years to the day since ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv Leicester (ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv) first came into existence.

In June 1992, Erasure were top of the UK charts, Disney’s Aladdin was the year’s box office smash, the first ever Premier League season was about to kick off and in the East Midlands, Leicester Polytechnic was about to evolve into ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv.

25 YEARS

Under Prime Minister John Major, the 1992 Further and Higher Education Act had changed the way education was funded, allowing 35 polytechnics to become universities - one of those being ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv.

25 YEARS 2

On the morning of 26 June 1992, Leicester Polytechnic officially became ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv. It was the start of decades of development, as ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv grew into the university it is today.

Two-and-a-half decades later and ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv is now recognised as one of the best in the country.  It has one of the country’s best-recognised community engagement programmes in #ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmvlocal, it has provided thousands of students with epic overseas experiences through #ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmvglobal and it has generations of students discover their potential and forge the career they want.

The university’s campus has been almost entirely transformed, sporting new and dynamic buildings, full landscaping, and high quality sports, catering and event venues.

Most recently, ÃÛÌÒ´«Ãºmv has been awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework, the Government’s new initiative to recognise excellence in university teaching.
